“We at the British Science Association have had the pleasure of working with the wonderful Helen Arney for a number of years. She has wowed the crowds at our Festivals in both Bradford and Aberdeen and performed as the closing act at the UK’s annual national Science Communication Conference. She is a total pleasure to work with, a consummate professional, natural born communicator and to top it all she is very very funny. No show should be without her.”
–Sue Hordijenko, Director of Programmes, British Science Association
“Helen was absolutely vital to the success of our #HookedOnMusic event. Bringing her unique blend of experience, knowledge and charisma, she steers the discussion keeping it interesting and relevant, helps the scientists communicate their message while allowing the audience to relate to her and thoroughly enjoy their experience.”
–Marieke Navin, Manchester Science Festival Director
“Helen has the wonderful ability to get an audience excited and keep performers relaxed. In all of our live shows at the Barbican her enthusiasm was infectious and resulted in forests of arms being raised to ask questions, while her calmness under pressure meant that the panel of experts enjoyed their role and gave their best.”
—Shane McCracken, producer, I’m A Scientist, Get Me Out Of Here
“For the second year now, our star alumnus has played a crucial role in the Imperial Festival’s growing success through dynamic science comedy programming. Efficient, creative and flexible, Helen is a one-stop shop who programmed and delivered two packed out Science Comedy Collider events, MC-ing performances by two high profile comedians to form the highlight of our Festival Friday. Employing just the right style and pitch, the wide-ranging audience of scientists and general public erupted into laughter, learned exciting new things and kept coming back for more. I can’t recommend Helen highly enough!”
—Harriet Martin, event manager, Imperial College Festival
“Thank you for your wonderful performance during dinner. Your songs provided great entertainment and the group were particularly impressed with your valiant efforts at singing the periodic table!”
—David Willetts, Minister for Universities and Science
“Helen Arney is a geek songstress of the highest order. She’s held crowds in the palm of her hand at everything we’ve ever booked her for – Bright Club, Einstein’s Garden at the Green Man Festival and Geek Pop. She sings like a bird, shines like R136a1 (look it up) and is always on tip-top form.”
—Hayley Birch, Geek Pop live event producer and programmer
“Helen is one of our established team of highly professional MCs, hosting theatre-based lecture shows in front of audiences of up to 1,000 teenagers. It’s a rare skill to be able to engage with that age group. As well as her witty and inclusive style of presentation on stage, she is also an excellent team player behind the scenes, planning meticulously before shows, and adapting to last minute changes extremely professionally. She is particularly good at managing Question and Answer sessions, keeping the panel on topic and ensuring that a session is always light but informative, with plenty of laughs.“
–Rob Eastaway, producer, Maths Inspiration
“Helen Arney took the Researchers Festival in Bergen to a whole new level of greatness with her science based humour and exceptionally witty cleverness. She was fantastic to work with and showed us how quirky, fun, amazing and laugh-out-loud funny the world of science can be.”
–Mildrid Kyte, Researchers Festival in Bergen, Norway
“The Science Comedy Supernova! event, hosted, produced and curated by Helen Arney on behalf of the Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation (ICG) at the University of Portsmouth was the highlight of this year’s National Astronomy Meeting held by the Royal Astronomical Society in Portsmouth. Nearly 200 people packed into “Tiger Tiger” at Gunwharf Quays, including many professional astronomers as well as members of the public, to enjoy a wonderful night of laughter. Helen did a fantastic job hosting this unique event, recruiting a superb mixture of professional and amateur talent especially for us. The evening went without a hitch and on top that, Helen performed in the show as well. We couldn’t have done this without her expert help and she will be forever on my christmas card list!”
–Prof. Bob Nichol, Chair of the Local Organising Committee for the Royal Astronomical Society’s National Astronomy Meeting 2014
